I was working with some athletes this week and discussing their goals. While goals are important there is often more emotional power generated by thinking through why we want to achieve something or who we want to achieve it for. This can build desire, the passion, the ardour that stimulates action and the will to put in hard work. Beyond that, because mostly we can only achieve something if we believe we can achieve it, we have to go to work on our belief. So we have these components to significant achievement – Goals, Reasons, Ardour, Action and Belief! Here are some of my favourite wise words on goals.

There is one quality that one must possess to win, and that is definiteness of purpose, the knowledge of what one wants, and a burning desire to possess it. – Napoleon Hill
In absence of clearly defined goals, we become strangely loyal to performing daily acts of trivia. – Anon

The great and glorious masterpiece of man is to know how to live to purpose.- Michel de Montaigne

Ambition is a poor excuse for not having enough sense to be lazy.
